Genus was founded through a United Kingdom partnership between colleagues. Anthony Wong brought in a seasoned lighting and film grip specialist in the market, Mark Blaker. Another partner was brought in from Australia to handle the digital marketing side of the business and e-commence functions. The company made a considerable splash on the market in a short period of time and helped pave the way for creative innovations that are still around today. The company never chased awards at trade shows, but it did receive best product at NAB in 2012 during the 3D craze, where a compact rig was created by the UK designers in conjunction with the original idea prototype by Alister Chapman.

In 2008, Genus was a reaction to the DSLR revolution that saw DSLR cameras start to be used for video applications, shaking up the entire videography market. As DSLR cameras were not designed for video camera general use, many accessories were required to assist the process of video acquisition using these cameras. Genus came about at the early stage of the market development, focusing on the compact GWMC Matte Box, which is still the industry matte box standard for 4x4 Filters. Other products within the range soon followed, and the DSLR accessories market quickly gained pace to see a significant number of manufacturers enter the DSLR accessories market.

Today it is based in New York, USA. The operations are quite new, and the company is set to reinvent itself and remodel the products that have been supplied the world over.
